ECLECTIC LISBON TOUR (8H)
Lisbon is undoubtedly a cosmopolitan and eclectic city and it is nowadays one of the trendiest cities in the world. It is at the top of the international tourists’ preferences, winning awards that distinguish it for its quality and diversity. During this tour of Lisbon, we will take you to discover a capital full of history and rich in culture, but also a bold and modern city, with avant-garde architecture.
We will start your tour in the heart of Lisbon, exactly in its historical centre, with the visit of the majestic St. George’s Castle, built in the middle of the XI century, which crowns one of the seven hills of the city and offers a magnificent view over the capital and the Tagus River. You will wander through the streets of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, Alfama, and feel its Muslim and medieval past. You can also visit its imposing Cathedral, built in the XII century, after the conquest of the city from the Moors, in 1147, by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
Proceeding with your tour of Lisbon towards the eastern area, we will arrive at the Nations Park, the greatest example of the capital's modernity, which contributed decisively to the internationalization of the city. It is a vast riverside area, where the World Exhibition was held in 1998, offering a breath-taking view of the Tagus River and the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest bridge in Europe. The Nations Park mirrors a new concept of urban space, with environmentally integrated infrastructures, being an extensive cultural, leisure, residential and business complex. Here you will see the most different expressions of avant-garde architecture, standing out the Lisbon’s Oceanarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe; Oriente train station, the impressive work of the Spanish architect Calatrava; and Lisbon’s Casino, one of the capital's entertainment hub.
Heading to the western part of the city, in order to finish your tour of Lisbon, we will arrive at the last must-see attraction, Belém’s district, from where the ships of the brave Portuguese navigators sailed, such as the illustrious Vasco da Gama, who discovered the sea route to India, in 1498. You will visit two of Lisbon's ex-libris, the Hieronymites’ Monastery and the Belém Tower, built in the XV century, by the king D. Manuel I, and recognized as world heritage by UNESCO. You will be astonished by the beauty and grandeur of these two monuments of the Manueline style, the genuinely Portuguese architectural style. Much more modern, but also evoking this golden period of the Discoveries, it is the Monument to the Discoveries, built in the XX century, which pays homage to the great Portuguese explorers.
This private tour of Lisbon could not end without giving you the taste of the delicious Belém’s custard tarts, one of the wonders of the national gastronomy, whose fame has spread throughout the world, from the United States to Japan. Bon appétit!
